Michael D. LaFaive is the director of the Morey Fiscal Policy initiative for theMackinacCenterfor Public Policy, where he has worked for more than 15 years.

 

Michael will be talking about some of the ballot proposals that will be on the November ballot.

Guest Speakers State Representative Jeff Farrington and Candidate for State Representative Sean Clark

Every 10 years, after the census, redistricting takes place. The state has changed the boundaries in Sterling Heights dramatically. In so doing they have created an open seat that encompasses much of Sterling Heights and a small portion of Warren.

State Rep Jeff Farrington will be speaking on what is going on in Lansing as well as telling us where his new district boundaries are.

Candidate Sean Clark will be telling us about himself (why he is running, what he stands for, etc); and will tell us which part of Sterling Heights is in his district.

Chief Judge Chmura will be speaking on the Rule of Law – What District Courts are about

SHUR is honored to be hosting Chief Judge John Chmura of the Warren District Court. John Chmura was born in Detroit and lived his early years in Poletown. In 1965 Judge Chmura’s parents bought a home in Warren which is where he grew up and went to school. He attended Michigan State University and earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from James Madison College. He attended the University of Wisconsin Law School in Madison where he was awarded his law degree in 1988. Returning to Warren, Judge Chmura began his professional career by working as a staff attorney for Hyatt Legal Services. He became involved with the Macomb County Taxpayers Assn. and in 1991 acting as pro bono attorney for the MCTA he filed suit and won the case against the Robin Hood legislation that the state wanted to enact. In 1991 he also established his own practice. Soon after he was appointed by Attorney General Frank Kelley as a Macomb County Public Administrator and began specializing in probate law. Governor John Engler appointed him to the 37th district court bench in 1996 where he still serves. The Michigan Supreme Court appointed him chief judge, a position that he still holds. Judge Chmura lives in Warren with his wife Ann Marie and his two children, Jonathan and Andrew. John has served as president of the Macomb County Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Division. He is past treasurer and president of Advocates Bar Association. He also served 12 years as treasurer of the Macomb County Probate Bar Association. He is involved with the Warren Symphony Orchestra and a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Kiwanis Club of Warren where he writes a weekly newsletter. As a member of St. Anne’s church he is a member of the Ushers’ Club and the Men’s Club as well as the De La Salle Dad’s Club. He is a merit badge counselor for the Boy Scouts of America and a member of the Detroit Athletic Club.

SHUR January Meeting with Chief Circuit Court Judge David Viviano

SHUR is honored to announce that Chief Circuit Court Judge, David Viviano will be our guest speaker at the January 25th meeting.

Judge Viviano will be speaking on the “Rule of Law” among other topics.

David F. Viviano is a graduate of Hillsdale College (Bachelor of Arts) and the University of Michigan Law School (Juris Doctor). He previously worked at two nationally-recognized law firms before starting his own firm in Mt. Clemens. Judge Viviano also served as City Attorney for the City of Center Line. Since his term began on January 1, 2007, Judge Viviano has served in the Civil/Criminal Division of the Court. Judge Viviano has also led the Court’s eFiling Pilot Project. In addition, Judge Viviano was recently chosen by the Michigan Supreme Court to participate in a pilot project to test reforms to the jury system in Michigan. David’s sister, Judge Kathryn A. Viviano, currently serves as a Judge in the Court’s Family Division. David’s father, Judge Antonio P. Viviano, served as Probate Judge from 1993 until 2002, and a Circuit Judge from 2003-2010.

SHUR September Meeting featuring Kathy Vosburg

Kathy Vosburg, Chair of the County Board of Commissioners will be the special guest speaker at our Sept. 28 meeting.  Kathy is the first ever Republican Chair of the Board of Commissioners.  She is married to Duane and they live in Chesterfield Twp.  She is serving her 5th term.  She owns her own tax consulting business.  Kathy is going to speak on “Limited Government”.

SHUR August Meeting

Due to the scheduling of a meeting in Lansing, State Representative Pete Lund will not be able to attend our Aug. Meeting.  He has been rescheduled for the Sept. meeting.  Watch for the date and time.

On August 24th we are honored to be hosting Ron Babin, who is the Vice President of the Michigan FairTax Association.  He will be providing us with information regarding this topic.

SHUR June Meeting – Meet Nolan Finley

SHUR is honored to be hosting Nolan Finley on Wednesday, June 22nd at 7 p.m.  The meeting is being held at Nick’s 22nd Street Steak House at the S.E. corner of Van Dyke and 22 Mile Rd., just south of the light.  Nick’s is across the street from ABC Warehouse.

Food will be served.  The cost of the event is $10.  Proceeds will be used to help candidates for city council. Please make checks payable to SHUR.  No corporate checks please.

Nolan Finley is Editorial Page Editor of The Detroit News; hosts “Am I Right” on Detroit Public Television; and often appears on “Flashpoint” on WDIV.  When we polled the members of SHUR, Mr. Finley was one of the guest speakers most requested.
